Early visual deprivation does not prevent the emergence of basic numerical abilities in blind children

چکیده
Studies involving congenitally blind adults shows that visual experience is not a mandatory prerequisite for the emergence of efficient numerical abilities. It remains however unknown whether developed lifelong strategies to compensate absence foundations vision would provide in infancy. We therefore assessed basic abilities and sighted children 6 13 years old. also verbal spatial working memory their relationship with mental arithmetic both groups. Blind showed similar or better as compared sighted. outperformed peers every task assessing demonstrated span. The correlation between sketchpad was stronger relative while correlations other two components (the central executive phonological loop) were affected by early experience. Our data suggest blindness does impair development competencies but influences associations some subcomponents.

Early visual deprivation severely compromises the auditory sense of space in congenitally blind children.
A recent study has shown that congenitally blind adults, who have never had visual experience, are impaired on an auditory spatial bisection task (Gori, Sandini, Martinoli, & Burr, 2014). In this study we investigated how thresholds for auditory spatial bisection and auditory discrimination develop with age in sighted and congenitally blind children (9 to 14 years old). Children performed 2 spa...

UNLABELLED Taurine transporter knockout mice show severe retinal degeneration at an early age. The study was designed to determine whether degeneration also takes place in the absence of light. Mice were maintained up to 6 weeks of age in cyclic lighting or in total darkness. Degeneration took place in both groups, but was more rapid in animals exposed to standard cyclic illumination. At the ul...

INTRODUCTION The incidence of Ad spermatogonia (stem cells for fertility) was assessed in 20 cryptorchid patients, all of whom had a successful orchidopexy in childhood but developed azoospermia following puberty. MATERIALS AND METHODS From a cohort of 231 patients who had a semen analysis following successful orchidopexy 20 patients (9%) had azoospermia. The patients were classified into 2 g...
متن کاملEffects of visual deprivation on synaptic plasticity of visual cortex
TBS (Theta Burst Stimulation) and PBs (Primed Bursts) are among effective tetanic stimulations for induction of LTP in hippocampus. Recent studies have indicated that TBS is effective in LTP induction in layer III synapses of neocortex, only if applied to layer IV. However, the possibility of neocortical LTP induction using PBs, has not yet been investigated. Sensory deprivation greatly influ...
